Baby Safe Havens to Stop Babies Being Abandoned

Return to Policies

On Wednesday, 9th February 2011, Ann introduced the Children's Protection (Lawful Surrender of Newborn Child) Amendment Bill which seeks to establish Baby Safe Havens in South Australia. Baby Safe Havens enable women to safely, anonymously and legally relinquish their newborn babies, and have been shown internationally to prevent babies being abandoned and in some cases, tragically dying.

In an Independent Weekly article published on Friday, 26th November 2010, Ann called for the establishment of Baby Safe Havens, and indicated her intent to introdcue the aforementioned Bill. To read the article, please see Independent Weekly: Chute Plan to Save Babies.

This was followed on the 29th of November by an interview by Mel and Kochie on Channel 7's Sunrise, which can be viewed below:

Tory Shepherd from the Advertiser also wrote a supportive opinion piece on Tuesday, 30th November 2010, which can be read here. Sonia Feldhoff, the ABC 891 afternoon presenter, also raised the issue on her Tuesday, 30th Novermber show, the transcript of which can be downloaded here.
